Day Trips from Mojácar

Day Trips from Mojácar

On the doorstep

Many people come to Mojácar for the sun, sea, and relaxed Mediterranean pace. Especially with its year-round great climate, it’s a hotspot for outdoor enthusiasts.  There are lots of things to do on the “doorstep”, whether you’re into watersports, golf, cycling, or padel.

Further afield

Perhaps you’re working from the coworking space at DeskSpace for longer, in which case you might be looking to explore a bit further.  There’s so much more to discover: there are hidden villages, rugged coastlines, historic castles, and quirky local markets.

Undoubtably, this list isn’t meant to be definitive (and yes, we know we’ve probably left off someone’s favorite place!). However, these are the spots we’ve personally visited and loved enough to return to. If you think there’s a gem we’ve missed—tell us!

Distances are measured from DeskSpace to the center of each village or town using Google Maps. In most cases, there’s more than one route, so feel free to choose your own path. We haven’t included travel times or how long to spend—some places might charm you for an hour, others for a whole day.

Local Towns:

Garrucha – 7.6 Km

Just down the road from Mojácar is the town and port of Garrucha. Check out Nautarum for a modern take on seafood, or stroll the promenade with an ice cream.

Vera – 17.2 Km

A favourite on A Place in the Sun for a reason. Vera’s town square is lively and full of character. Market day is Saturday—parking can be tricky, but the churros stall is worth it!

Cuevas de Almanzora – 23.5 Km

Go for the castle, stay for the art and history. Within the grounds: a sculpture gallery, a Picasso, and even a cave house. Avoid market day unless you’re into crowds—parking is easier when it’s quiet.

Agua Amarga (via coast road) – 35.5 Km

The drive is beautiful (and a little nerve-wracking if you’re not used to winding roads). Park above the beach and walk to the bay. Known for hidden beaches, possible nudist coves, and even “hippy stones.”

Turre – 8.2 Km

Easy to overlook from the main road, but well worth a stop. Wander to the square, visit the church, and enjoy Friday market day.

Villaricos – 18.7 Km

A quiet marina town with black sand and pebble beaches. Feels different from Mojácar. Sunday is market day.

San Juan de los Terreros (via coast road) – 35.5 Km

A safe and scenic drive north. Plenty of beautiful beaches along the way. Try Cala Cristal for snorkeling or Playa de los Carolinas for family-friendly fun.

Níjar – 57.3 Km

A creative village filled with handmade crafts—pottery, jarapa rugs, asparto goods. Perfect for browsing, photo walks, or shopping for unique gifts.

1. Family Friendly Walks Near Mojácar

  • Walk to the source of the Rio Aguas, some great geology along the way.
  • “Hunt” for garnets in the crater near Nijar, Almeria.  A great walk / treasure hunt, with some steep sections.  Not for July / August but great for most of the year.

2. Salar de los Canos

This is a wetland area, near Vera is ideal for the twitcher, nature lover, or simply the curious.  If the season is right you might get to see some Flamingos.  It’s worth remembering that peak flamingo season is late June, but spring and autumn are also great for spotting a variety of migratory birds.

Salar de los Canos is almost opposite AquaVera the waterpark with slides.  (We talk more about AquaVera on our Watersports page)

3.  Salinas de San Pedro

A unique landscape of pink salt flats, flamingos, and coastal trails. Bring your camera and enjoy a surreal, otherworldly setting. It’s a 90-minute drive that’s well worth it.  As above – remember that flamingos are migratory birds and the best time to see them is late June.

4. Sorbas Caves & Village

Explore the fascinating Cuevas de Sorbas—a maze of gypsum crystal caves—then wander the charming whitewashed village. A mix of adventure and history less than 45 minutes away.

5. Desert of Tabernas

Europe’s only true desert and a filming location for countless spaghetti westerns. Visit the mini-Hollywood theme parks or simply roam the dramatic terrain. About 50 minutes from Mojácar.  Famous film sets from spaghetti westerns. Wikipedia or a better description here.  Also explore for olive oil tasting.

6. Observatories

I’ve written about the two Observatories near Mojacar that are within about a 2 hour drive into the hills and dark skies.  These are perfect for stargazing or scientific curiosity.  Either Observatorio de Calar Alto or Observatorio Astronómico Cabezo de la Jara

7.  Lake Negratín

Lake Negratín is a tranquil escape about a 2 hour drive from Mojacar, with a mix of nature, adventure, and relaxation. There are even some thermal baths.

8.  Lunar Cable Park

So good I’m mentioning it twice, if not three times.  Firstly I’ll mention it here.  We wrote a blog about how Lunar Cable Park makes a great day trip with the inflatables (May to October).  Additionally there are kayaks to rent and a good priced chiringuito (open air coffee shop / restaurant) from where you can watch the wakeboarders do their tricks.

We also give Wakeboarding a mention on Outdoor Adventures near Mojacar.  We love the vibe there.

9. Local Markets

Nearly every town has its own market day. Worth the detour!

10. Cabo de Gata Natural Park

Just over an hour from Mojácar, this protected coastal area offers volcanic cliffs, hidden coves, and crystal-clear waters. Ideal for hiking, snorkeling, or simply unwinding in nature. tunning nature reserve, ideal for a longer day trip or overnight stay.

… and between all those trips, perhaps you need to do some work? For everything you need to know about flexible office spaces here, see our full Mojacar coworking guide.
