Visiting the Mariposario de Níjar – A Butterfly Garden Near Mojácar

This is about a day trip from Mojacar to see butterflies.

Earlier this year, my daughter and I took a trip to the Mariposario de Níjar. It’s a beautiful butterfly garden about 40 minutes from Mojácar. Although we only stayed for around an hour and a half, it was a wonderful visit that left us with some lovely memories.

The garden is home to around 200 exotic butterflies. They all live freely in a lush, flower-filled environment. There’s a large “flight garden” (voladero) filled with plants and trees chosen specifically to support the butterflies. Visitors are free to stroll through at their own pace—we enjoyed it so much we went round twice!

The visit is self-guided, with information available in Spanish, French, and English. Groups can also book guided tours in advance.

One of the highlights is seeing the butterfly life cycle up close—from eggs and caterpillars to chrysalides and finally the mature butterflies fluttering around the garden.

Right outside, there’s a small café offering drinks and snacks, plus colouring activities for children. Across the car park, you’ll also find a chiringuito where you can relax after your visit.

From memory, the butterfly garden is closed on rainy days. It also closes at the end of October and reopens in April, but it’s always best to check their official website or Facebook page for the latest opening times.

Butterflies are important pollinators and indicators of a healthy environment. Seeing them up close is a gentle reminder of how valuable it is to protect biodiversity.
