Music, white noise, brown noise? The right background sound can make a huge difference when you’re working. If you’ve seen our about us page, you will know that I’m dad to an 11 year old daughter. She loves to fall asleep to the sound of rain (haha — you can take the girl out of England…).
Here at DeskSpace, we’ve made a conscious decision (for now) not to pipe music around the coworking area. Why? Because we believe your perfect work environment is deeply personal. What helps one person focus might distract another completely.
Instead, we’ve created a flexible space where you can curate your own audio experience. Bring your headphones and create your own perfect soundscape — whether that’s lo-fi beats, classical piano, nature sounds, or complete silence.
The science backs this up too. Studies show that different types of background sound work better for different tasks and personality types. Some people thrive with lyrical music during creative work, while others need instrumental tracks or ambient noise for deep focus. Some find white noise essential for blocking out distractions, while others swear by brown noise for its deeper, more soothing frequencies.
We’ve seen our members adopt fascinating sound strategies. Some alternate between energizing playlists for routine tasks and silence for complex problem-solving. Others have discovered binaural beats or café atmosphere recordings. A few prefer podcasts during repetitive work or the gentle hum of a fan. One of my favourites is Gregorian Chants.
The beauty of our approach is that you’re in control. You can experiment, switch things up throughout the day, or stick with what works. Your comfort matters, and sound is a crucial part of that equation.
