Skiing is southern Spain: Is this the ultimate Mojácar challenge?
Skiing in the Sierra Nevada
When there’s snow on the mountains
Whilst, I haven’t visited the ski slopes of Sierra Nevada. Earlier this year, our daughter went on a school trip. I’ve been doing a bit of research which I share my early findings here.
The ski slopes of Sierra Nevada in southern Spain are about 3 hours away by car from Mojácar. The ski resort is both high and north facing – and typically there’s snow from late November* to end April / early May. There are Webcams Sierra Nevada website so that you can see the current snow conditions. It gives details of the parking, with options to pay in advance as well as full directions. *15th November 2025 – first snowfall of the season.

The official Sierra Nevada website offers live webcams so you can check the snow conditions before heading up. You’ll also find details about parking (with options to pre-book) and full directions, and links to local accommodation.
If you’re new to the slopes, the website New to Ski provides an excellent overview of skiing in Sierra Nevada, including piste maps and advice on which runs are suitable for different levels of skier.
And here’s the fun part: picture yourself skiing in the morning, driving back to Mojácar in time for a dip in the sea, then finishing the day with a sunset mocktail and dinner by the beach. Not bad, right?
Challenge 1
Ok, this might sound like a stretch, but hear me out. Just like the Three Peaks Challenge in the UK (where adventurers climb the three highest mountains, often within 24 hours), southern Spain has its own unique twist: can you ski / board in Spain in the morning and then swim in the Mediterranean in the afternoon?
Challenge 2
If skiing and swimming in the same day isn’t enough for you, here’s an even bigger test: the Three Board Challenge.
- Morning → Snowboarding in Sierra Nevada
- Afternoon → Wakeboarding at Lunar Cable Park (just outside Vera)
- Evening → Paddleboarding, Stand Up Paddleboarding or even Kite Surfing back in Mojácar (take a look at our Mojacar Guide to Watersports)
